Exciting news for the lacrosse community in Africa! World Lacrosse recently welcomed four new African nations to its growing list of members, further solidifying the sport’s global reach following its approval by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for inclusion at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Zimbabwe is among the newest members, joining Botswana, Mozambique, and Zambia in this incredible milestone. With these additions, World Lacrosse now has an impressive 90 National Federations worldwide—marking a huge step forward in expanding the game across new regions.
World Lacrosse continues to make significant strides in growing the game globally, and 2025 has been a landmark year for the sport’s development in Africa. This year alone, the governing body has added 11 new members, including recent additions from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, and Togo earlier in March.
Most recently, Zimbabwe joined Botswana, Mozambique, and Zambia as the latest nations to become part of the World Lacrosse family. These new memberships not only expand the sport’s footprint but also strengthen the rapidly growing Africa Association of Lacrosse (AAL).
World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We remain committed to the development of lacrosse in Africa across a diverse Continental Federation, and we are thrilled for these new members to pick up and enjoy the game.”
With these additions, Africa now boasts vibrant lacrosse development across three key regions—west, east, and south—marking an exciting new chapter for the sport on the continent and worldwide.
