The Zimbabwe Heritage Lacrosse Team made history in its debut at the Heritage Cup at Haverford College in Philadelphia, securing an impressive fourth-place finish among nearly 30 international teams.
Founded by sisters Tariro and Tapiwa Kandemiiri, the team entered as underdogs but exceeded expectations, falling just short in the bronze medal game against Argentina.
Reflecting on the journey, Tariro shared:
“I am overjoyed by this success… when my sister and I thought of creating a team, we were worried whether we would find people who want to play? How will we get to the tournament? Where will we get the uniforms? But many people helped us to get here, and we are grateful.”
Coach Mark Mozier praised the players’ determination despite limited preparation:
“We didn't get a chance to prepare. We met on Zoom just before the tournament. The girls knew what they were doing, and they played well together.”
Looking ahead, Tapiwa is confident about the team’s future:
“Finishing fourth in our first year gives us hope that we can take the cup next year.”
As the only African nation represented at the tournament, Zimbabwe’s strong performance marks an exciting step forward for lacrosse on the continent.
